# JULES run “No matching platform "lotus" found”

Hi,
I am attempting to run the JULES u-dz272 suite on JASMIN. It successfully ran for me a month ago, but it is now unable to find the lotus platform during job submission. See the error message below.
Image (a) - the output from “~/cylc-run/u-dz272/run1/log/job/1/fcm\_make/01/job-activity.log”. No other files are produced in “~/cylc-run/u-dz272/run1/log/job/” folder.
Image (b) - Within the suite, the only reference to ‘platform’ and ‘lotus’ is in the “~/cylc-src/u-dz272/flow.cylc” file:
I have checked the general set-up and the .conf files with the suite owner, and they all look fine. The suite is being run from cylc2.

What is your login?
I could only see 2 users who have run that suite. One was emrobi, so if you compare your files to
~emrobi/cylc-run/u-dz272/run1/log/job/1/fcm\_make/01/job
etc then perhaps you’ll see something in the suite which has to be updated?

Thanks for your response.
My login is zaracra. I may not show up on a list associated with that suite as I still hadn’t sorted all the general run errors when it was previously ‘working’. However I was able to progress much further with the run than I am now able to.
emrobi is the suite owner who I initially worked with to troubleshoot this problem.
In emrobi’s files, the file “/home/users/emrobi/cylc-run/u-dz272/run1/log/job/1/fcm\_make/01/job-activity.log” gave the output
**[jobs-submit ret\_code] 0
[jobs-submit out] 2026-07-09T08:12:17Z|1/fcm\_make/01|0|38692866
2026-07-09T08:12:17Z [STDOUT] Submitted batch job 38692866**
I had a look through the other files (and back into her set-up files) and still can’t find anything that might cause the issue.

I can’t see your files on there, although you can give people permission with:
chmod -R a+rX /home/users/zaracra
if you wish.
I think that emrobis suite ran since you were last successful. You can either checkout a new version and run that, or use the fcm diff command, or regular unix diff against emrobi’s directory.
There will be a minor change that either you or that user have made, and the repo comparison or regular diff -r to compare directories should show it. That is what I would do if I had permissions for your files.

I don’t seem to be able to change my permissions, but below is the output using diff -r for emrobi’s and my versions of the u-dz272 suite
There are slight differences in the location of the jules model folder and the output folder, and emrobi has a number of previous pristine files.
I can’t see anything obvious relating to the platform/lotus.

If you look at the jules source then yours is different to Emma’s. Hers is vn7.7, which is presumably ok, and yours is your own version.
So either try using vn 7.7 as in the other user’s suite, or look in your version of jules to update the platform info
I expect it’s something like that

Hi Zara,
From the output of `cylc config` I’m guessing you have a `global.cylc `config file in your `~/.cylc/flow/8` directory? If so move it out of the way and try resubmitting the workflow. Looks like it has overridden the central one entirely (which is where lotus is defined) rather than only the `[install]` section and thus you’ve lost the configuration for the lotus platform.
The output from `cylc config` should have a section like this in it defining what lotus is:

....
[platforms]
....
[[lotus]]
install target = localhost
copyable environment variables = FCM_VERSION
submission polling intervals = PT30M
execution polling intervals = PT30M
execution time limit polling intervals = PT5M, PT10M
clean job submission environment = True
hosts = localhost
job runner = slurm
[[[meta]]]
description = LOTUS Slurm job
```

Hi Ros,
I did have the global.cylc config file in that directory and I’ve removed it.
However when I now run “cylc config”, I don’t get any output. I’m assuming this means I’m missing the central cylc configuration file?

What happens when you try to run the suite?
If it still won’t run, we really need to be able to see into your directories to be able to help further.
Please run:
`chmod -R g+rX /home/users/zaracra`
Note: Do make sure your `~/.ssh` directory remains with the permissions like this:
```auto
rshatcher@cylc2$ ls -ld .ssh
drwx------ 2 rshatcher users 0 Apr 7 10:30 .ssh/
```

The “No matching platform “lotus” found” error is still present when I try to run the suite.
I have run the permissions change so you should now be able to see my directories.

I’ll do that and then do a test run to make sure I can get your workflow running…

Hi again.
I’m waiting for the appropriate GWS accessv on JASMIN but I’ve been able to run the `fcm_make` task fine which uses lotus.
@zcra could you try logging out of the cylc server on JASMIN, logging back in again and then (as the very first thing you do) re-type `cylc config` and paste what you get, if anything?
Until this is fixed we won’t be able to proceed, as detailed above.

Thanks for getting involved.
I’ve logged back into the cylc server (using ssh -A [zaracra@login.jasmin.ac.uk](mailto:zaracra@login.jasmin.ac.uk) followed by ssh -AX [cylc2.jasmin.ac.uk](http://cylc2.jasmin.ac.uk)), then typed “cylc config” and nothing was output. The prompt returned after a couple of seconds.

What do you get for `which cylc` and `which python`? For example, I get…
```auto
$ which cylc
/apps/jasmin/metomi/bin/cylc
$ which python
/usr/bin/python
```
It looks like you might have tried to install `cylc` and some other related tools via `pip` or `conda` at some point (see your `~/.local/bin/` directory) which may be an issue.

Hi Jonny,
I got the following…
I recognise some other modules that I installed using pip from JASMIN JuptyerLab, so I must have accidentally tried to install cylc there too.
When I removed the file and ran `which cylc` again, I got the same as you (`/apps/jasmin/metomi/bin/cylc`).
Upon running the suite again, fcm\_make successfully ran and did not flag the lotus error.
