I am setting up a 2020 present-day coupled simulation on ARCHER2 (suite u-eb716, based on UKESM1.1).
Please accept any misunderstanding in this.
To initialise the physical ocean and sea ice in a 21st-century state, could you please help stage the coupled NEMO and CICE restart files from MASS to ARCHER2? If these are present.
The Preferred restart state is:
- UKESM1.1 ScenarioMIP SSP3-7.0 at 2020-01-01 (or SSP2-4.5)
(Alternative: the standard UKESM1.1 Historical u-cj512 end dump at 2014-12-31)
Specifically, the 3 component restart files needed:
1. NEMO ocean restart: *o_*_.nc
2. Iceberg restart: *o_icebergs_*_restart.nc
3. CICE sea ice restart: *i.restart.*.nc
Target directory on ARCHER2:
/work/n02/n02/db18005/restarts/

Since these are your preferred intial conditions, do you know their workflow IDs (e.g. u-ab123)?
FYI I’ve checked and u-cj512 is available on the new MASS system…

I don’t have access to MASS I believe.
The suite ID I believe is u-bw848 a UKESM1 SSP3-7.0 fixed-forcing simulation branched at 2020-01-01 (from ensemble member r3i1p1f2).
Could you please check if the 2020-01-01 ocean/ice restarts from u-bw848 (moose:/crum/u-bw848/) are available?
Otherwise it was u-cj512, extracting the 2014-12-31 / 2015-01-01 ocean/ice restart directly from u-cj512 on MASS would be great.
Having both would be great .

I’ve checked those two workflow IDs. I don’t appear to have access to the u-bw848 and there are only restarts for much earlier in the run for u-cj512…

This thread has been brought to my attention as I ran the u-bw848 simulation, and I was asked to approve access to the restarts on MASS.
I have approved the access request, no problem at all, but I just wanted to check that the restarts are what you are expecting:
The bw848 simulation was branched-off from a SSP245 2020 simulation (i.e. initialised from SSP245 in 2020), but it is itself not an SSP245 2020 ScenarioMIP simulation. It is a 500-year simulation that was run under perpetual 2020 conditions (unlike an SSP245 simulation).
The climate and particularly the ocean continues to evolve and get warmer under fixed SSP245 2020 conditions / fixed GHGs etc. from year 1 of the simulation onwards. It will be quite different from initial conditions corresponding to the year 2020 in an SSP245 simulation.
Perhaps you are already aware of that and that is what you want - in which case great and sorry to jump in here - but I just wanted to check!
If you want SSP245 2020 restarts, it would be better to use the appropriate restarts from an actual SSP245 run. Also please note that bw848 is a UKESM1.0 simulation, not 1.1.

Thank you, I appreciate this very much, I’m fairly new to this (so sorry for anything I misunderstood).
I was looking for restart files for Ocean and Ice files for a start of 2020, ideally for SSP2-4.5 if not SSP3-7.0, for UKESM1.1. The closest I could find for SSP2-4.5 was the UKESM 1.0 bw848 suite. The Ocean and Ice files aren’t too critical for my case but are needed. Thank you for the note, on bw848 being a perpetual-2020 drip run rather than a transient SSP245 state, this is good to know. For my purposes the sea and ice initial conditions don’t need to be highly precise.
If you know of a set of restart files for at and beyond 2020 for SSP 245 UKESM 1.1 this would be ideal. Otherwise I will use the bw848 suite restart files

For a 2020 start, you’d probably be better off taking a restart from ScenarioMIP. For UKESM1.0 there are many ensemble members for SSP245, if you look here on JASMIN: /badc/cmip6/data/CMIP6/ScenarioMIP/MOHC/UKESM1-0-LL/ssp245 you’ll see many ensemble members. The original suite-id is listed in the netcdf metadata, e.g. u-be537 for r1i1p1f2, and so on. If you then extract the 2020 restart dump, that would be closer to your objective than bw848.
If you want UKESM1.1 restarts, you could look here: /badc/cmip6/data/CMIP6/ScenarioMIP/MOHC/UKESM1-1-LL. It looks like there is only SSP370 available though.
