Standard orography fields for UM global grids

Hi, I am in the process of writing a data reader that I would like to be as general as possible when it comes to reading UM output files. I am unfamiliar with the UM but have been asked to produce a method to read both netcdf and pp files (ready for required fields to be exported in geojson format). I have been making some progress with accessing the data using cf-python, however I have run across a problem with the files. The vertical coordinate for the files I have been provided with is hybrid height, however I need to be able to interpolate the data onto a specific altitude or pressure level. Assuming one of the variables I have been provided with is pressure on theta levels, interpolating onto a specific pressure level is not a problem. However, in order interpolate onto a specific altitude I need to calculate the actual height of the model levels. This requires orography which is missing from the files I was sent. Having looked for some other example files this doesn’t seem unusual. In an attempt to reduce the limitations on vertical interpolation I was wondering if there were pre-existing orography files for standard global model grids N96 etc (for present day) that I could store locally to substitute in when the orography field is missing.

Thanks for your help

Alex

Hi,

If you have access to a compute system that can run the UM (ARCHER, Monsoon2, or local), the orography files (ancillary input files ) can be found under $UMDIR/ancil/atmos//
