Understanding boundary layer diagnostics

Hi

I’ve output some boundary layer diagnostics 03 216 and 03 222, BOUNDARY LAYER HEAT FLUXES W/M2 and B.LAYER TOTAL MOISTURE FLUXS KG/M2/S.

I’ve output on RHO levels, I’d expected these variables to be zero outside of the boundary layer, but they’re not i’m getting values way outside our boundary layer.

Looking at the stash table i’m wondering if I’m meant to output just to RHO levels? levelf is 5 (first layer of boundary layer) levell is 6 (last level of boundary layer), level t is 1 on atmospheric rho levels.

Any advice if i’m misunderstanding how to make the proper stash request or a hint on where to look for more info on this diagnostic.

Cheers

Hi Grenville

It’s suite u-dh775

bl_levels is 69 - that’s only one fewer than the number of levels. levelf and levell don’t indicate level numbers - they indicate that the data is valid from the first (levelf=5) to the last (levell=6) boundary-layer levels

Hi Grenville

ok so bl_levels is models levels minus one - this is a standard setting. I’m expecting it to output on 69 levels and these are still on my model rho levels. So my stash request is correct, but my understanding of the variable being output is not I think? If my boundary layer depth is not encompassing nearly the entire atmosphere I was expecting my boundary layer fluxes to be zero outside of the boundary layer but that’s not what we’re seeing. I’m guessing I need try digging through the code to work out exactly what it is we’re outputting then.
