Hi,
Sorry to bother you, but I heard on the grapevine that you have fairly recently ported HadGEM3-GC5.0 to ARCHER2. Is this correct, and if so can you point me to the suite ID and any relevant documentation needed to run it?
I also heard on the grapevine that the UK CMIP7 contribution is likely to be UKESM1.3, using GC5.0 as its physical model. Is this likely to be ported over any time soon?
Thanks,
Charlie

We have an N216ORCA025 GC5 suite that runs on ARCHER2 (not including ozone redistribution) and a cylc 8 LL GC5 suite whose provenance is unknown (to me) that also does not include ozone redistribution. I’m not sure we are in a position to support either, but the MM suite is better tested than the LL.
My grapevine says UKESM1.3 is not ready yet and I have no estimate of when it will be.

Thank you very much indeed. Are you able to point me to the suite IDs for the two GC5 suites? And who it was who ported them over to Archer2?

The cylc 7 suite is u-cy010 - Ros ported it.
The cylc 8 suite is u-dj927 - I ported it.

Thanks very much Grenville, and apologies - when you said you didn’t know the provenance, I assumed that meant you didn’t know where it came from or who ported it.
And apologies for one more basic question - please point me to the relevant documentation (if there is any) rather than answering here, if that’s easier - what is the difference between cylc 7 and 8? This doesn’t refer to the actual model, does it, but rather the software/infrastructure to manage and run the model?

Sadly, I am not aware of documentation for either suite.
You are right, cylc 8 is an evolution in workflow management. We have some documentation here - Cylc 8 on PUMA2 and ARCHER2. We are still learning about the new system, but many of its features will be familiar from cylc 7, so getting started should be relatively straightforward. The tui will feel like a return to the 80’s, but we hope to have the web-based gui soon.

Hi Charlie,
We do also have an archer2 branch of the “official” GC5 development suite which is u-da412 and it does have documentation: https://code.metoffice.gov.uk/trac/gmed/wiki/GADocumentation/GAJobs/GCDev/GCDocumentation/u-da412
To checkout, run: rosie co u-da412/archer2
This is using Cylc 8. We have not ported the ozone redistribution yet.
Annette
Thanks very much Annette, really appreciated.
Out of interest, is there any expectation that the ozone redistribution will be ported any time soon? As we know from Seb’s work, this is particularly important when it comes to very warm climates such as the early Eocene, which I am likely to be looking at.
